Tecogen Completes Successful Demonstration of Low Emissions After-treatment System on a Natural Gas Generator

WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Tecogen® Inc. (NASDAQ: TGEN) announced today its successful completion of the initial phase of a contract to upfit a conventional, widely available, commercial 130 kW generator.  Utilizing Tecogen's low emissions after-treatment system, the generator proved to be compliant over the full range of operating conditions. The project, announced in October, was underwritten by an industrial customer requiring a group of emergency standby generators on its property in Southern California to perform at extremely low pollution limits.  Standby generators are normally exempt from the strict limits required for cogeneration and other heavy use generators, but only if the annual use can be limited to 200 hours. The projected use by this customer will exceed this limit.

The testing phase of project, which included a wide variety of loads and simulated load swings, was successfully completed on schedule at Tecogen's Waltham Massachusetts laboratory.  Under all test conditions, the unit maintained compliance to the South Coast Air Quality Management (SCAQMD) District Rule 1110.2, the regulation that applies to power generation equipment in Southern California. These results were presented to the customer, and due to the overwhelming proof of the systems effectiveness, are now proceeding with SCAQMD permit applications for this test generator and the others on the property. During the permit process, the other units will require individual Tecogen after-treatment kits. A video about the project is now available at Tecogen's website at http://www.tecogen.com/products-emissions.htm.

"We were very pleased with the project results," said Robert Panora, Tecogen's COO. "We achieved very low emissions with the unit, similar to a fuel cell, which we expected. We were able to quickly complete the job because the engine, which was unfamiliar to us, required no adjustment whatsoever. A simple, effective after-treatment kit that can alter the emissions output from an ordinary standby generator, without any engine modification, such that could be permitted for regular daily use, would have great potential for use in Demand Response programs and other strategies to curb facility peak electricity demand."

Tecogen believes this unit will be the first natural gas standby generator permitted to the requirements of Rule 1110.2 since it became effective more than six years ago.
