TECOGEN'S DISTRIBUTED GENERATION PRODUCT LINE MEETS NEW STANDARD

Tecogen's High-Efficiency Products Conform with IEEE P1547 -- the New Standard for Distributed Generation Connectivity

WALTHAM, Mass., July 31, 2002 - Tecogen Inc. announced that its 60 kW and 75 kW natural-gas powered cogeneration systems will meet a new standard governing interconnections between non-utility-owned distributed generation and the distribution grid. Distributed generation (DG) refers to small-scale power-generating technologies such as Tecogen's that are located at the end-user's site and interconnect with a utility's power distribution grid. Known in its draft form as IEEE P1547/D07, the new standard should help ease some of the permitting difficulties that DG manufacturers have faced in the past. ITS ETL Semko, a worldwide accredited testing, inspection, and certification organization, performed the compliance testing and specification review for Tecogen.

In order for a DG customer to set up their on-site system, numerous interconnection and liability requirements must be satisfied before the customer is allowed to connect to the grid. According to the U.S. Department of Energy's Distributed Power Program, "These requirements have been designed to ensure that [DG] systems operate safely and reliably with the distribution system, but they have evolved to be sufficiently complex and burdensome."

Testing and Specifications

The Tecogen systems that were tested for compliance use an induction generator, requiring conformance to only certain sections of P1547. In some sections, it was necessary to administer a test to a product sample, while other sections required a specification review only. Listed below are the applicable sections of compliance to P1547, as well as the inclusive compliance to other established standards:
